Synbiotec S.r.l. was formally established in December 27th
2004 but the idea was already born in 2002 with a previous design and the
consequent submission of a research and business plan to the Ministry of
Education, University and Scientific Research (MIUR) within the Legislative
Decree n. 297 of 27th July 1999 entitled "Reorganisation of the discipline
and reduction of the procedure for the support of scientific and technological
research, for the diffusion of technology and for the mobility of the
researchers"- which completed the reformation of the Italian research
process. One of the legislative innovations of the Lv.D. 297/99 is the
possibility, for the first time, to carry out an academic spin-off.
A "spin-off" is a financial scheme with the aim both to promote youth
enterprise development and to stimulate the connection between universities and
companies. With the Directorial Decree n. 1160/Ric. of 27th September 2004,
published in the Official Gazette on 8th October 2004 n.237, MIUR approved and
supported with finance, the formation of a University of Camerino "spin-off".
Synbiotec S.r.l. intends to develop new functional foods including synbiotics,
with the capacity to improve the human intestinal ecosystem. The more recent
innovation within fermented dairy products is represented by the so-called
probiotics or functional foods: milks inoculated with particular bacterial
strains having the capacity to resist to the attacks of acids in the stomach and
to reach in a live form the intestine tract where they colonize enriching the
present microflora. Therefore, it is intuitive how innovative can be considered
the research developing new products and technological processes, with the
isolation of bacterial strain more corresponding to these particular functional
foods profile.
Moreover, the spin-off intends to use the image, the territorial distribution
and productive ability of the local dairy firms, already covering 35-40% of the
Italian market of yoghurts, thus promoting local productions.
